This weekend the Tulsa World published a two part series titled “Becoming Katie”
It is a very sensitive and informative article about Luke being transformed into Katie. Katie is now graduating from High School as apparently the first openly trans to ever do that in Oklahoma. It is not uncommon for there to be open gays (different than trans as the article carefully informs) in more urban OK schools now – but they still suffer for it. Any day in the on-line TW you will find hate directed at blacks, gays, Muslims, the poor, women – you name it. No comments were allowed on this article on day one. On day two they warned that comments would be tightly monitored and abusive ones removed – and they were.
It is not the sort for article at all that one expects on the front page of an Oklahoma newspaper – but that is where it was – two days running. Well worth a read. It is Pulitzer material to my mind. I hope the national press picks it up.
